So I didn't get out for the final run of week 1 today because one of the dogs woke me up at 4am this morning with insistent barking and I didn't get to sleep again till 5.30am and then I forgot my cellphone back at work this afternoon so I had to go back into town to grab it and by the time I got home it was dark. Hopefully I can get out tomorrow morning!
Oh on my last run I ran 1.5km! Yes!

Day Two of Week One
I did day two of the training program yesterday and it went great. I walked back into the house after the run feeling awesome. My glutes and thigh muscles were pretty sore when I woke up yesterday morning, probably from all the physical activity the day before but I pushed through the pain anyway.
The run started off well. I did a brisk walk and some stretches to warm up and then started the first 60 seconds of running. At the second 60 seconds I was came to our ostrich paddock and three of the ostriches started running along side of me. I increased my pace a bit and started racing them. They all pulled ahead pretty soon.
The run just before the turn around time was the worst. I had to push myself to keep going and it seemed like the longest minute ever. It was on a very slight up hill which really seemed to take it out of me. I did finish the rest of the run quite easily though.
We mustered in 150 feral goats that are eating all our desperately needed grass yesterday afternoon which gave me a bit more physical activity so today’s rest day is a welcome relief.
Tomorrow: Day three: The last day of week 1.

The run that never was
I never got to do day two of the program last night! I am so annoyed with myself. I got home from work and decided to take my broken curtain rail down and then go for the run but just as I finished taking the rail down my friend Emma, who has been doing work experience on our neighbour’s farm, appeared and asked if I wanted to go for a ride with her on the neighbour’s farm. I figured it wouldn’t be a really long ride but boy was I wrong. We ended up going for about 3 hours and spent about an hour of that in the pitch black. I don’t know how we managed to find our way home. I was also bareback that whole time (which is much harder on the body then with a saddle). So yea, there was no time for it last night. And then today I played three games of netball and two games of squash which REALLY took it out of me. (It was supposed to be a rest day today).
I almost decided that all that physical activity made up for the missed run but no, I’ve committed to follow the program and follow the program I shall. So tomorrow I will do day two and then day three on Wednesday and start week two on Friday! I am very, very annoyed. Oh well.
The good thing is I experimented with strapping my arches today and they only hurt at the very end of the last squash game so I’m happy with them. I am going to have to look into getting insoles though, because I use quite a bit of tape to strap and it will cost a lot to do it every training run and for all my practices and games.

Rest Day
Well yesterday was a rest day although it’s never really a rest day since there is always something to do on the farm. But I only walked a horse up a couple of hills to a new paddock so it wasn’t exactly strenuous.
I had netball practice on Wednesday night and broke a sweat there with the warm ups and then the game but felt really good the whole time which was awesome. I didn’t puff as much as I was expecting, as certainly not as much as some of the other girls on the team! I did notice that my arches were hurting in my feet a bit, which is probably due to my flat feet, I’m going to have to look into getting some insoles or perhaps getting a shoe that supports my arches properly. But for now I’m just going to strap them.
Walking around at work yesterday I also notice a bit of pain in my thighs, close to where the hip joins the thigh bone. I put it down to my legs not being used to running on the road. They are fine today. Today it’s another brisk 5 minute warm up alternating 60 seconds of jogging with 90 seconds of walking. I had a late night last night and so am opting to do the run once I get home from work rather then get up extra early this morning for it. I’m still a growing teenager and need all the sleep I can get.
Tomorrow I am supposed to be having another rest day but have three games of netball in the morning and squash in the afternoon so won’t be getting much rest at all. I wanted to stick to the program as much as possible but unfortunately this is the way it has to be.
I’ll post tomorrow about how today’s run went. I’m really looking forward to it.

First Run
I’m starting off slow and steady in my running since I know pushing myself too hard will just cause me to get hurt or sick, or possibly just hating the thought of it. While I was up in Auckland last week I bought myself a few pairs of running shorts, some running tights for the cold mornings, a couple of jackets and dozens of socks to get me started. I need to feel like a runner you see. It gets cold here in the mornings, and pretty soon it’s going to get even colder so the right gear was essential if I was going to keep running.
I’m following the Couch-to-5k Running Plan off the Website coolrunning.com to start off with. The program has been aimed people who are unfit and have little running experience. It eases you gradually into running rather then dumping you straight in the deep end.
The program starts off with one week of 5 minute warm ups then alternating 90 seconds of walking with 60 seconds of running for a total of 20 minutes ending with a cool down of 5 minutes which includes stretching and walking. The plan calls for the program to be done 3 times a week.
After a few false starts after one very late night, and one late wake-up call I went for my first run this morning. At 6.30am in the morning, its dark and today it was INCREDIBLY foggy. For safety’s sake I brought a torch with me, but I will defiantly need to invest in some reflective clothing and a head lamp for the future. I could barely see in front of me and almost talked myself out of going as I imagine cars hurtling blindly through the fog and hitting me at top speed. Thankfully we live on a quiet country road and cars can be heard from miles away so I decided to give it a try.
I left the house at 6.41am and forgot to stretch but I did walk for the first 90 seconds. I won’t forget that again as I don’t want to get injured. The run went well. At 6.55am I turned for home and walked the last 5 minutes as a cool down. I reached home at 7.09am.
Total Time = 28 minutes
Total Distance = 1.2km

Starting the Race
I’ve started running.
I’ve always liked to think of myself as a runner… although I had no right to do it whatsoever. Going for a run once in a blue moon does not allow me to constitute myself in this particular band of people. You know the ones I mean, the people who get up early in the morning even when its below zero just to get feel those endorphins flowing, the people that slog it out for hours racing against themselves and others to feel the satisfaction when they finally finish a race and the people who know fully well that they are fit and healthy thanks to the work they put in. I want to be one of those people.
There is no one particular reason that has made me decide to start running. I’m also an equestrian (although that may change soon) and am just about to join squash and netball teams, and so recently have realised the need to up my fitness. When I’m out there galloping on the cross country course, I get tired and often have to slow down so I can regain my breath which has, in turn, made me gain time faults and taken my score down.
Also while I was playing with the idea of starting to run, my best friend told me she had started running and had been really enjoying it. “Good for her” I thought and then made the decision to start running for sure. I am a very competitive person and HATE losing, even to the best of them and my best friend and I have always had this slight rivalry going on when it comes to sports, strength and fitness. I couldn’t let her get the better of me.
Perhaps one of the other reasons I want to do this is for a guy. I know, probably not the best reason, but a reason all the same. I have a thing for him and he’s fit, he’s healthy and somehow because I’m not so fit I feel like he thinks I’m a lesser person. Which, in reality, is absolute bollocks since he has the most integrity I’ve ever encountered in everyone and would never think that. Anyway, this will give us one more thing to talk about.
And probably my last reason I’m doing this is for myself, just plain old me. I want to feel fit and on top of it at all times, rather then getting puffed and tired after a small sprint. I want to be able to play impromptu games of rugby and soccer and not have to sit it out when I’m tired. I hate not being able to give it my all. And so I run.
So welcome to my journey (or my race if we are being runner minded) of becoming a runner.
